Fillers New York City and New Jersey

As we age, our faces begin to deflate as our bodies produce less and less collagen and elastin, and hyaluronic acid, the soft tissue components that gives our skin its supple, youthful look, as well the structure of facial bones that ultimately serve as foundation of the facial anatomy.  This overall loss of facial soft and bonny tissue volume leads to formation of fine lines, wrinkles sagging of the tissues and decreased cheek fullness and projection, which can in turn create all sorts of problems, from deep laugh lines (nasolabial folds) between the nose and mouth, to hollowed-looking eyes, or sagging jowls.

Dermal fillers are an ideal way to address the creases, volume loss and hollowing in the skin that occur naturally with age.  Dermal fillers can also be used to enhance the volume and shape of the lips, and restore a more youthful appearance to the neck, chest, and hands. What areas of the face can be enhanced with Dermal Fillers?

Dr. John Mesa, a Board Certified Cosmetic Latin Plastic Surgeon will determine the filler or combination of fillers to fit on your treatment goals, your anatomy, and your age to make you look refreshed, rejuvenated and most importantly with a natural look.

Dermal Fillers on the Cheeks:

Multiple dermal fillers like Voluma, Radiesse, Radiesse +, Juvederm, etc., can be injected in the midface to restore the volume loss or enhance the cheek area. Through multiple injections performed with very small needles, Dr. Mesa can give you back the “apple” Add the lost “apple” volume back to your cheeks, diminishing the creases around the mouth and Lifting sagging jowls.

Dermal Fillers on the Lips:

Dermal fillers are the safest and more reliable procedure to enhance the volume and shape of the lips (upper and lower lip). The lip anatomy has multiple structures like the vermillion (red part of the lip), white lip line (vermillion border), philtrum columns (vertical lines between the nose and the upper lip) and the white roll at the edge of the lip all can be enhanced with dermal fillers. Dr. Mesa evaluates every single point of the lip anatomy and injects dermal fillers in the needed areas to give you a naturally enhanced augmented lips without an overdone look. Dermal fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane and Belotero are routinely used to enhance the lip anatomy.

To increase the volume of the lip, Dr. Mesa injects the body of the lip (vermillion or red area). This can create a pouty look and avert the lip outwards so that more of red shows. As a general rule the lower lip has to be bigger than the upper lip in a two thirds to one third ratio to maintain a natural looking lip.

To enhance the definition of the lip contour Dr. Mesa injects dermal filler in the vermilion border, the junction between the white and red part of the lips, By injecting this region, the lip border defines better, similar to wearing lip liner. Injection of dermal filler along this line can also help with lines that cross through this area.

To enhance the flattened upper lip skin, Dr. John Mesa injects dermal fillers in the philtrum columns: two vertical lines in the center of the upper lip that runs from the base of the nose to the upper lip border. By enhancing this double-ridge, it is possible to give the upper lip more shape and curve, enhancing the sensuality of the lips, thus rejuvenating the upper lip (effacing of the philtrum columns (flat upper lip) is a visible sign of aging.

To enhance the sensuality of the upper lip, the cupid’s bow, or the V shaped area in the center of the upper lip can also be enhanced with dermal fillers. Done in conjunction with the philtrum, it can achieve a pleasant overall shape to the upper lip.

To improve the descended position of the corners of the mouth (oral commissures), Dr. John Mesa can inject injects dermal fillers in these areas, thus turning the corners of the lips horizontally, or even upwards creating a more positive and happy appearance. Very often Dr. Mesa uses Botox in this area to enhance even more the correction of descended position of the corners of the mouth.

Dermal Fillers on the Forehead and Between the Eyebrows Lines:

Dermal fillers like Belotero and Restylane Silk can fill in horizontal lines on forehead and the vertical “11’s” between the eyes (glabella region), thus eliminating these signs of aging and/ or enhancing the effects or Botox in these areas. In patients that are not candidates for Botox of the forehead or glabella region because “droopy” eyebrows or excess of skin in the upper lids, dermal filers are the best options to get rid off /improve the forehead and between eyebrows lines.

Dermal fillers for the hands

Are your hands making you look older than you are? When you take care of your face, your hands undoubtedly show the signs of aging, thus “revealing” you have undergone rejuvenating procedures on the face and neck. Aging changes are the result of volume loss, making the tendons on the backs of the hands stand out (and making them look like they belong on a much older woman) and skin damage due to sub exposure. Dermal fillers like Radiesse could be used tor restore the hand dorsum volume. When combined with gentle TCA chemical peel of the hands, dermal fillers can significantly rejuvenate the appearance of your hands.

Dermal fillers for acne related sunken scars and other sunken scars

Certain types of sunken scars secondary to accidents, acne previous and some surgical procedures can be made less apparent with dermal fillers. Dr. Mesa by injecting an small amount of filler under the depressed area of skin, can ad volume to the area thus lifting the area to same height as the surrounding skin. To make a scar look even better, resurfacing the skin with a TCA chemical peel can significantly improve the appearance of the scars.

Dermal fillers in the decolletage (area between the breast cleavage)

Due to sun damage and aging, craggy lines in the skin start to appear in between the breasts cleavage (decolletage) around after the early 30s. FAQ

How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers work by adding volume in he area where they are injected. Then injected at skin lines or creases, they unfold these creases thus producing a smooth surface. When Injected deep, like on top of the bone, they lift up the soft tissues above (skin, muscles, fat) thus augmenting the volume and increasing the contour like a facial implants.

How long will my results last?

The duration of the dermal fillers varies depending on the type of dermal filler used and the patient. The movement of the area injected influences also the longevity of the fillers. Most of the fillers last between 8 months to 1 to 2 years.

What are the most common side effects of dermal fillers?

Immediately following the injections, you may experience some mild redness, minor swelling, or bruising in the treatment area. These symptoms typically disappear within few days. Allergic reactions are extremely rare. Most patients are able to resume normal activities immediately following the treatment.

What should I do before treatment with dermal fillers?

Patient should refrain of any medications that make the blood “thin” (blood thinners) and therefore increase the risk of bruising with the injection process. Medications and supplements to avoid are aspirin, ibuprofen, Vitamin E, fish oil, and other blood thinners for at least one (1) week before treatment. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be safely taken prior any injection since it doesn’t increase the risk of post injection bruising.

What should I do after treatment with dermal fillers?

Patients are refrain from taking any medication or dietary supplement that can act as a blood thinner for 48 hours after injections. Patients should also refrain from doing exercise for at least 24 hours after injection (exercise increases temporarily the blood pressure, thus increasing the risks of bruising at the injection sites). Patents are also are recommended to ice the treated area with ice packs for at least 6 to 10 hours post treatment.

Why not go to an Obstetrician, Gynecologists, Primary Care Physician, Internist, Dentists and “cosmetologists” for dermal fillers?

Practitioners like Obstetricians or Gynecologist and other doctors who are not formally residency-trained and Board Certified to perform dermal fillers have been found to suffer a much higher rate of complications, as it’s a side interest to them, and not a treatment they’re certified to do all day long. One of the most common complaints is minimal improvement, asymmetries, etc. Only a licensed professional with the knowledge, training and skills required to achieve optimum results should perform dermal fillers. Look for a plastic surgeon who is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and who has completed his training at some of the top residency and fellowship institutions.
