What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgery to reduce the size of the labia minora (the inner folds of the vagina) to make them more balanced with the labia majora (the outer folds). A labiaplasty is the most commonly performed vaginal rejuvenation procedure. In addition to improving vaginal appearance, labiaplasty can also relieve discomfort from the vaginal folds tugging and twisting against clothing.

What are the benefits of labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty surgery delivers shorter labia that do not hang down below the level of the outer folds. This provides a more attractive vaginal appearance. This procedure can also reduce symptoms caused by twisting and tugging of overly long labia while wearing tight-fitting clothing, exercising, or engaging in intimate activities.

What can I expect with a labiaplasty procedure?

Dr. Mesa performs labiaplasty under local anesthesia without any sedation. This procedure can be performed under general anesthesia if the patient prefers. Dr. Mesa will customize a labiaplasty treatment plan to perfectly suit your needs. The most common type of labiaplasty is a trim, in which extra tissue is removed and incisions are closed with absorbable sutures. Another procedure is the wedge, in which a pie-shaped section of tissue is removed, maintaining a natural border. If needed, the clitoral hood can be reduced in the same procedure.

What is the recovery time after labiaplasty?

Most patients can return to work in approximately one week after labiaplasty. You can expect to experience some swelling and discomfort, which can be reduced with ice and by elevating the area. Intercourse and tampon use may be resumed in four to six weeks after the procedure. Recovery is generally quicker with trim labiaplasty.

Am I a candidate for labiaplasty in NYC, NJ, or Miami?

The appearance of the vagina can change with childbirth, weight loss, or aging. You may be a good candidate for labiaplasty if you:

  • Have experienced aesthetic changes in the vagina
  • Have large or uneven labia
  • Want to improve your vaginal appearance
  • Have physical discomfort due to excess labial skin during intimacy, exercise, or when wearing tight clothing

FAQ

Can labiaplasty be medically necessary?

In some cases, labiaplasty may be considered medically necessary. For example, when overly long labia result in painful tears in the skin of the vulva during intercourse, or when pain, irritation, or chafing occur while wearing a bathing suit, biking, walking, running, or sitting, this surgery may be medically necessary.

How long does a labiaplasty procedure take?

In most cases, labiaplasty can be performed in less than an hour.

Will labiaplasty leave visible scars?

Dr. Mesa carefully places labiaplasty incisions within the natural folds of the vaginal area. This means scars are concealed when the incisions heal.
