What is liposuction?

Liposuction, or lipo, is a cosmetic procedure to slim, re-shape, and improve the contours of the body by removing excess fat through suction. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but rather a fat removal procedure designed to get rid of areas of stubborn fat that are not responding to diet and exercise.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

This procedure is not for individuals who are significantly overweight. You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you:

  • Are close to your ideal body weight (within 30%)
  • Are in good general health
  • Have good muscle tone and skin elasticity

What can I expect with liposuction?

Anesthesia will be administered to help ensure your comfort during the procedure. Local anesthesia is often all that is needed in selected cases. A small, discreetly placed incision is made in the treatment area, through which a cannula (thin hollow tube) is placed.

The cannula is used to loosen excess fat and suction it out of the body with an attached surgical vacuum or syringe.

What is recovery like after liposuction?

You will need to wear a compression garment during your recovery after liposuction to help control swelling and to compress the skin to your newly sculpted body contours. Drains may be placed in your incisions to remove excess fluids. You can expect some swelling and bruising. Medications may be prescribed to manage your discomfort and help prevent infection. Depending on your occupation, you can most likely return to work within a few days after liposuction, but will need to wait a few weeks before resuming exercise or more vigorous physical activities.

Liposuctions FAQs:

How soon will I see results with liposuction?

You can expect to see results when swelling subsides within a few weeks after the procedure. It may take a few months for final results to appear.

Are there different types of liposuction?

Several different advanced liposuction techniques are available, including:

  • Tumescent liposuction: Sterile saline solution containing lidocaine (a local anesthetic) and epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) is injected into the treatment area to aid in fat removal, reduce bleeding, and make treatment more comfortable.
  • Power-assisted liposuction (PAL): This technique uses a cannula that moves rapidly back and forth for quicker, easier fat removal with greater precision and less trauma to the tissues. PAL may be the best option for removing larger volumes of fat.
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL): A thin metal rod that emits ultrasound energy is inserted under the skin to help break down fat for easier removal.
  • BodyTite™ assisted liposuction (LAL): Radiofrequency energy inserted through a small incision is used to tighten the skin and emulsify fat, which is then removed through a cannula.
  • J-Plasma® assisted liposuction (LAL): Helium plasma focuses radiofrequency energy inserted through a small incision, and it is used to tighten the skin right after the excess of fat is removed with a liposuction cannula.
