What is breast implant removal?

Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure in which an implant is removed. In some cases, it is necessary to remove the scar tissue capsule that developed around the implant. The implant may or may not be replaced. This surgery may be performed to correct problems or to improve the aesthetics of augmented breasts that are too large, too small, too low, uneven, or other issues.

Am I a candidate for breast implant removal?

Breast implants may be removed because of ruptures, complications, a change in implant type, size, shape, or position, or a woman’s decision to return to natural breasts. You may be a good a candidate for breast implant removal if you:

  • Have a saline or silicone-filled breast implant has ruptured
  • Want to switch to a different type of breast implant (from saline to silicone or vice versa)
  • Want to increase or reduce your breast implant size
  • Want to change the position of your implants or the shape of your breasts
  • Have developed complications, such as capsular contracture (tightening of the scar tissue surrounding the implant)
  • Have elected to no longer have breast implants

What can I expect with a breast implant removal procedure?

Dr. Mesa performs breast implant removal at a fully accredited NYC, NJ, or Miami hospital or surgery center. The procedure may be performed under general anesthesia. The procedure takes approximately two hours to perform. In many cases, the implant is removed through the original surgical scar, but incisions may be placed discreetly in other locations. After the implant is removed or replaced, the incision is closed with a focus on limiting the appearance of scars.

What is recovery like after breast implant removal?

You can expect to be up and moving around the day of breast implant removal surgery, and to return to work in approximately seven to fourteen days. You will need to wear a special supportive bra to aid your recovery.

Arrange to have someone drive you home and stay with you for the first few days. You may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort which can be managed with medication. Swelling should subside within a few weeks.

FAQ

How do I know if my breast implant is leaking and needs to be replaced?

If a saline breast implant ruptures, the implant usually deflates within hours or days. With a silicone implant, a hole or tear in the implant shell may be less noticeable and could go undetected for some time. Imaging, such as an MRI, can help your doctor determine if a leak has developed in a silicone breast implant.

Why change from saline to silicone implants?

Some women with less natural breast volume may prefer silicone implants to minimize the risk of rippling.
